First SDA Meeting Summary

2/7/2015

Thank you to all of you that made it out to our first meeting of the semester, despite the ruthless weather conditions! As promised, Sarah Koszyk, MA, RD, made it out to talk about the entrepreneurial side of dietetics; adding yet another avenue to the array of possibilities within the field!

For those of you that missed out, here are some of the key points from the presentation:
Picture
1. There are many career paths in dietetics, choose what interests you the most, do some research,  and pursue it! First and foremost, join the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, if you have not done so already. There are many different Dietetic Practice Groups that you can join which help you network in the direction you wish to go with your interest.

2. Build your skill set. Dietetics is a fast growing field, and we do not need to be reminded of how competitive this field is. Take the time and effort to build your online presence. Familiarize yourself with social media, websites, and other up-and-coming platforms through which dietetic professionals are spreading their knowledge and expertise. Coaching is another skill that will be extremely beneficial to future dietitians, remember that successful clients reflect your work. Public speaking is a widely used skill, as well as a growing industry within dietetics. There is a growing demand for dietitians to become spokespersons for large companies. Koszyk also reminded us of how important marketing is. We must know how to market ourselves, our knowledge, and our philosophies. If we are promoting products and services, we want to make sure that we stand behind those products and services.

3. Find a Mentor. Determine what you like; what are your needs and wants? find someone who is in that field, do some research, and conduct a professional interview. Do not be shy to step out and contact someone. Do not be afraid to make suggestions, emphasizing how you can make a difference to them, and who knows, you might just end up with a career opportunity.

4. Time to Grow. In this scientific field, we are constantly learning and we must stay up to date as well as adapt to the information and misinformation coming our way. Take classes, read up on new and current information, and connect with people frequently. There are many ways to network; joining local organizations, or clubs at school (SDA if you haven't already joined, you definitely should!).

In conclusion, just remember to keep an open mind to the vast possibilities awaiting after (or before) graduation. Above all, stand behind what you truly believe in and follow your heart!
Join  us at our next meeting, Tues 3/3: 1230-2pm RPF (rosa parks room F).
